The Boston Red Sox have suspended outfielder Jarren Duran for two games after he aimed a homophobic slur towards a fan during his team’s 10-2 loss to the Houston Astros.
The incident occurred at the bottom of the sixth inning with Duran at the plate, when a fan could be heard shouting, “You need a tennis racket.”
Duran, who was 0-for-2 with two strikeouts at the time, turned around to the fan and could be heard saying, “Shut up, you f*****g f****t.”
The 27-year-old later apologized for his actions, noting that “young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility.”
The Red Sox also released a statement regarding the incident, noting that they “addressed this incident with Jarren immediately” and “echo” his apology.
The franchise has announced that they will be donating Duran’s salary for the two games to PFLAG (Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays).
