President Joe Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, for federal gun charges and tax evasion sparked criticism from across the political spectrum, including critique from President-elect Donald Trump.
The pardon follows months of assurances from Biden and the White House that no such action would be taken, with Biden previously stating that he would “abide by the jury’s decision.”
However, Biden’s pardon places him among a select group of presidents who have granted clemency to family members.
Trump himself took similar action as president, pardoning Charles Kushner, the father of his son-in-law Jared Kushner, during his first term.
Kushner faced a series of 2005 convictions that included preparing false tax returns, retaliating against a cooperating witness, and making false statements to the Federal Election Commission.
