President Donald Trump signed an executive order prohibiting transgender women and girls from competing in women's sports. The order, titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” directs federal agencies to withdraw funding from schools that do not comply. Trump framed the policy as a way to protect female athletes, stating that “women’s sports will be only for women”. The order relies on the Education Department to reinterpret Title IX, a law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded programs. The department's deputy general counsel, Candice Jackson, affirmed that Title IX enforcement would be a priority. The order also directs the State Department to push the International Olympic Committee to implement similar policies based on sex rather than gender identity. The move follows a broader trend, with more than two dozen states already enacting restrictions on transgender athletes in school sports.
