Russian authorities have banned the Elton John Aids Foundation, citing its support for LGBTQ+ rights as a basis for their decision. The foundation, founded by British superstar Elton John in 1992, is focused on funding HIV treatment programs across various countries, including Russia.  The organization also advocates for the LGBTQ+ community in Russia, where the “movement” is banned.  Declaring the foundation “undesirable,” Russia’s prosecutor general’s office warned that its operation in Russia could result in criminal prosecution for its staff and partners. Russian authorities also accused the foundation of promoting “non-traditional sexual relationships” and partaking in a campaign that aims to “discredit Russia.” “When a musician plays along with those trying to sow the seeds of democracy, it is propaganda. And when it’s Elton John calling the tune, then it’s more than just anti-Russian propaganda, too.
