Karla Sofía Gascón has made history as the first openly transgender actor to receive an Academy Award nomination. Gascón, 52,  earned a Best Actress nod for her role in 'Emilia Pérez,' a film about a cartel boss who transitions from male to female to evade vengeful criminals. Prior to this achievement, Gascón won the Best Actress award at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, sharing the honor with co-stars Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Zoe Saldaña. This recognition made her the first openly transgender performer to win a major prize at Cannes. The BAFTAs followed the Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Globes in nominating the transgender performer in the Best Actress category.   'Emilia Pérez' secured a remarkable 13 Oscar nominations, leading the pack with nods for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, and Best Original Score. 'The Brutalist' and 'Wicked' trail closely behind with 10 nominations each.
